My son had a lengthy hospital stay this summer.
As I was unable to move around with my newborn baby, my mother took time off work to be with me the whole time.
The son must have been lonely not being able to see his mother, and I imagine his mother had a lot to deal with as she dealt with a mischievous and sickly three-year-old.
Watching the two of them watching TV that morning made me think back to this summer, and I was captivated by a variety of emotions: gratitude, relief, regret, and a little jealousy.

I felt the love and respect for everything that made up this photograph from the photographer's gaze, which seemed to treasure the way things were, and to try to preserve them as they were. I don't think anyone other than the photographer could have captured the two of them looking so at ease. It's as if I can always remember the background to this photo, and feel the feelings that were expressed. I felt that this is a photo that I will treasure for a long time to come.
